C. Reflective Practice: Collection Development

"Those kids who are hungry for books aren't always going to be straight, able-bodied, white males. And they want books that reflect that. Just as we need black students graduating top of their class at Harvard and brilliant female astronauts as our role models, so do we need our diverse literary heroes to remind us that the world is a playground for all, no matter who you are."  ~Jacob Hood

Why do we need diverse books in our collection?

"The close alignment of library media skills to the P21 skills demonstrated the value of P21 and the role of the library media specialist and technology professionals."

"Library media and technology professionals are in the unique position of supporting all students in all curricular areas and have a depth of knowledge no other educator can provide.

Library media specialists have been working on 21st-century skills for years. Having these skills identified on a national and state level gives a new platform for building and supporting that work. "
