Reflection  - Write a brief written reflection below each question; you can elaborate when you share with colleagues at the Showcase.

How did you approach the work?

I initially considered my Teacher Development Plan and the goals that I've been working toward since the beginning of the year.  Our school's special area team has chosen to focus on learning more about attention deficit hyperactive disorder and its affect on student learning.  We are learning strategies to help students with ADHD succeed in our classrooms.

Through my research, I have learned many behavior management strategies to use with our students.  Many of these strategies are helpful for all of our students--not just the students with ADHD.  Providing students with choices in their learning is another strategy that teachers can use to more fully engage students with ADHD (well, actually all students).

So, in reflecting on how I can provide choice to my students AND still teach the curriculum, I decided to implement Genius Hour with my third grade students.  I chose the Healthy Living Unit and tweaked it so that the same objectives and standards were still taught--I just allowed for students to choose their research topics and methods of presentations.

How did an evidence-based perspective affect your practice?

I was much more mindful of the lessons that I was planning and the way that I intended to teach each lesson.  I spent a great deal more time reflecting on what worked and what didn't work in order to be better prepared for the following week.  I became very invested in the Genius Hour and  I really wanted this to be a successful and positive experience for my students (and for me).

How will you engage in EBP going forward?

My next EBP goal has to involve makerspace and student engagement / learning.  I'm not sure how I will frame it but this is what I'm really interested in learning more about (as well as figuring out how to make it all connect to the library).
