Digital Citizenship instruction is provided to all students in accordance with the BCPS Growing Up Digital initiative and PreK-12 Digital Citizenship Scope and Sequence. Library Media Specialists have been tasked with coordinating implementation of this mandatory Digital Citizenship instruction in collaboration with school leadership and teachers at Middle and High schools. BCPS has earned annual District Digital Citizenship Certification by Common Sense Education based upon our provision of this instruction.
This page includes implementation guidelines and links to Digital Citizenship resources for MS & HS Library Media Specialists.
Implementation Process
MS LMSs are responsible for coordinating implementation of Lessons & Slam Dunks for Grades 6-8 in collaboration with school leadership.
See the MS Digital Citizenship Implementation Plan for suggested content connections and implementation options.
One Grade 6 Schoology Lessons MUST be implemented in ELA classes as it is integrated with Grade 6 ELA & GT ELA curriculum units (see Implementation Plan).
Slam Dunks for Grades 6-8 may be implemented in any content area where all students in the grade level are enrolled in the course and will receive the instruction.
Teachers must add you to their Course and make you an Admin so that you can copy the Slam Dunk links and Assessment from the Secondary Library Media Group resource folder to their Course.
Schoology Assessments are required but may be ungraded. Quizzes must be assigned to classes by teacher of record, or teacher can add LMS to the Course and shield them as an Admin for assigning an Assessment
NOTE: To preview an Assessment from the Secondary Library Media resources folder, the teacher/librarian must Add to Course or Copy to My Resources. You can do so from the cog beside the Assessment in the curriculum folder.

Digital Drama Unplugged (Schoology Lesson materials) integrated with Gr 6 ELA Unit 3 and Gr 6 GT ELA Unit 1.
Online Relationships (Slam Dunk) *This Slam Dunk is on the topic of sexting. Consult with Health teachers, who have a lesson on sexting in Health curriculum (may be combined as one lesson). Gr 8 Health teachers also have forms on file for any students whose parents/guardians have Opted Out of lessons on sexual health; these students could be excused from this Digital Citizenship instruction (school-based decision).
Implementation Process
HS LMSs are responsible for coordinating implementation of Slam Dunks for Grades 9-12 in collaboration with school leadership.
See the HS Digital Citizenship Implementation Plan for suggested content connections and implementation options.
HS LMS should offer to co-plan/facilitate these as they are able, and are expected to support and track implementation.
Slam Dunks may be taught in any order, however it is recommended that these be taught as early as possible in the school year so that students can apply concepts. These lessons could be connected to relevant content learning activities, or scheduled at the beginning or end of a quarter before students begin a new unit.
Schoology Assessments are required but may be ungraded in the teacher's Gradebook. Assessments must be assigned to classes by teacher of record, or teacher can add LMS to the Course and shield them as an Admin for assigning an Assessment.
NOTE: To preview a Quiz from the Secondary Library Media resource folder, the teacher/librarian must Add to Course or Copy to My Resources. You can do so from the cog beside the Assessment in the curriculum folder.
