Updates for 2019-20: Collection Development Plan Year 2 & Beyond
-
Collection Analysis (section 2): Average Reading Level was eliminated, as we discovered this data is not accurate in the TItleWise Analysis. You will still look at Average Lexile for the collection. See this Reading Level Correlations chart for information about how Lexile correlates to reading levels.
-
Collection Analysis by Category (section 3): A column for recording Balanced Dewey Difference (% over/under recommendations) for each Dewey range/Classification was added. This data enables you to identify any areas that are significantly above or below recommendations for a balanced collection.
-
Previous Year Key Actions (section 4): A column was added for noting any remaining concerns you have for the top 3 priorities from the previous school year, after considering progress made towards addressing these.
Process & Directions
Follow the steps below to gather the data needed for each numbered section of the Collection Development Plan. *We are aware that many elementary schools have genrefied non-fiction sections. Use the Visual Inspection & Comments/Notes column in Section 3 to customize your answers to reflect genrefication within Dewey ranges.

3. Collection Analysis by Category
- Data from TitleWise Analysis:
- Data from Destiny:
-
Refer to the Collection Statistics-Historical Report guide to obtain annual circulation statistics.
-
Biographies- Destiny does not separate Biographies from the 900s for reports. Therefore, you will not enter numbers for "# of Circulations" and "% of Annual Circulation" for Biographies.
-
If (in addition to prefix F) you see prefixes like FIC, -Fic-, or [Fic] on this report, do not count these as they may include Fiction eBooks which will be counted separately using the eBook Circulation Report.
-
Ignore any other Call Number prefixes on the report that are not listed on the Collection Analysis by Category chart.
-
eBooks/Digital Audio - eBook circulation data is not included on the Collection Statistics-Historical Report.
4. Previous Year Key Actions
-
List the top 3 priorities identified from the previous year's Collection Development Plan.
-
Reflect upon the concerns, goals, and next steps presented.
5. Collection Analysis Planning Guide
-
Prioritizing- Ranking your priorities is an important step in the process because you must consider funding sources, time, space, school needs, and many other elements. Ranking the needs of your collection will support your strategic plan for addressing those concerns. Use the drop-down menu on the Digital CD Plan to select priorities by Dewey category (or write them in on the Worksheet). You will focus on the top 3 priorities during the current school year.
6. Executive Summary:
-
Draft the Executive Summary LAST, after completing Sections 1-5 to gather/analyze data and identify concerns, goals, and next steps.
-
Synthesize the information gained from your data analysis, and explain how this data will inform your collection development strategies and key actions.
-
Refer to the Executive Summary on the Year Two Sample Collection Development Plan as an example.
6. Schedule a fifteen minute meeting with your principal to present and discuss the plan and obtain their signature.
7. Send the signed original copy of your Collection Development Plan by November 15, 2019 to Tisome Archer at Library Media Programs, Jefferson Building Lower Level. Keep a copy for your own reference as you engage in collection development this year.
