SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes)

Info:

  • UPDATE:  2014-15 SLO Dates - Teacher SLOs are to be submitted for approval to principals on or before October 10th. Principals will have until October 24th to approve SLOs.  *These dates wereprovided to ODL on Aug 7th and are subject to change; your principal will give you dates.
  • Challenge for Secondary LMS will be to target skill(s) aligned with AASL/CCSS for which you can provide a pre-assessment (prior to instruction) AND a subsequent assessment for the same skill after instruction (to the same class), in order to provide evidence of your impact on student learning over time. Also, finding or creating an appropriate scoring tool to be used for both pre/post assessment.

Resources and Samples:

Writing SLOs:

Teachers are required to write one SLO aligned with a Principal's Goal for the school, and one SLO aligned with Content. While secondary LMS are NOT required to do this, we encourage you to do it voluntarily in order to demonstrate your effectiveness and impact on student learning and achievement.

Today we will work collaboratively in order to begin planning for writing SLOs aligned with Library Media standards.

Use the steps outlined below to get started! Refer to the Resources and Samples above for guidance.

  1. Open a copy of the SLO Template 2014-15 as you work. *This template has been revised since last year by the Office of Staff Relations.
  2. Statement of Outcome:
    1. Identify an AASL Indicator that is coverered through instruction from the LMS during the school year for a particular grade level, AND clearly aligned with grade-level CCSS ELA-Literacy Standard(s) using the Crosswalk. Think of a teacher/class where you could "piggy back" on their likely research activities, who might do a similar activity more than once during the course of the year, or who might already have "baseline data" showing evidence that students need to improve upon a research skill.
    2. Identify the corresponding Indicator(s)/Objective(s) from the Maryland School Library Media State Curriculum 9-12.
    3. Refer to Standards for the 21st Century Learner in Action, pp. 19-39 to locate the grade-level Benchmark(s) for the AASL indicator and grade level you chose. Benchmarks are competencies to be achieved by students in middle schools by Grade 8 (Gr 6-8)and in high schools by Grade 10 (Gr 9-10) or by Grade 12 (Gr 11-12)
    4. Write your Statement of Outcome based on the aligned standards and Benchmark you identified.
  3. Rationale:   Briefly explain why this outcome is important for students at this grade level. Include how it supports school-wide focus. List the aligned AASL, MSC, and CCSS standards/indicators/objectives/benchmarks.
  4. Students:  Identify the grade level and student population; Office of Staff Relations recommended you use one class.
  5. Interval of Instruction: A school year, semester, quarter, or unit are acceptable intervals. Since we're starting late this year, use November-May, 2013 instead of the entire school year.  We've heard you must report student performance on growth Targets by May.
  6. Target(s) & Evidence:
    1. Example starter sentence: By [interval of instruction]  _____% of students in [specify student population] will demonstrate progress toward mastery of [skills indicator], as measured by [scoring tool] (attached) and as outlined below: [tier targets to show desired student growth].
    2. Evidence used to measure student learning and growth will include [specify evidence such as formative assessments, artifacts, portfolios, etc.]
  7. Refer to the RESOURCES and SAMPLES above to help you complete the remaining sections of the SLO form.
  8. Please consider SHARING SLOs you have created with your colleagues. Keep in mind that some SLOs will have been created to support principal’s SLOs, which may vary from school to school.
    1. Save your file to your H: drive with this filename format:  Lastname_SLO_Gr#.docx
Name any associated documents (such as scoring rubrics): Lastname_SLO_Gr#_title.docx or .pdf
See Kelly’s Sample SLO files (already in the folder) for examples.
    2. Upload your SLO files to this folder: Secondary SLO Samples  *Request access if you are not already a member of this bcpslis wiki. Kelly will give you Writer access to the SLO Samples folder so that you can upload your files.
