Elementary LMS PD April 2015

AGENDA                                                                                       Welcome Slide

1.  MSDE Annual Report

  • Continuing issues were revealed as your TitleWave profiles were updated:

    • Still over 3,059 video cassettes (VC) and 1293 audio cassette tapes (TP) in Destiny collections. PLEASE REMOVE.

    • 3.496 items with call number prefix MRD (for some, a combination of computer software and audio CDs)

      • Aged computer software (some 20+ years old!) is no longer usable with current devices; PLEASE REMOVE.

      • Audio CDs currently in Destiny with call number prefix MRD will have prefix changed to CD this summer.

    • Once you have removed all items VC, TP, MRD etc.: Email Donna Gruzs to ask that copies be deleted from Destiny.

  • You will receive the MSDE Report with Instructions via email on April 27. Online submission deadline is May 15

  • MSDE is using a new survey platform (Survey Monkey).

    • You will NOT be able to print your completed online survey as you have done previously.

    • You MUST complete all survey items on the MSDE Report with Instructions document (in MS Word or on paper) BEFORE submitting the online survey, and then email the completed MS Word doc (or a scanned copy of the completed paper Report) to our office as directed.

2.  School Library Facilities and Collections

  • The Hillcrest story:  Neglected collection; dirty books, furnishings, shelves, carpet; clutter everywhere (library/workroom).
  • Continuous WEEDING and periodic INVENTORY are essential. All school library spaces must be clean and clutter free.
  • CD2015 Book Order Audits:  Books ordered that did not meet selection criteria or review requirements; "fluff" titles that do not represent quality children's literature (to be ordered only in moderation); no eBooks ordered.

  3. LMS Evaluation & School Library Annual Report
  • New LMS Evaluation instrument (DRAFT) based on Danielson domains:
Domain 1: Planning & Preparation, Domain 2: The Library Environment, Domain 3: Instruction,
Domain 4: Professional Responsibility. Compare to the OLD Librarian Evaluation.

  • BCPS School Library Annual Report:  End of year data analysis, reflection, and self-evaluation.  You will receive a Google Form via email.  Find inspiration in Library Girl's blog post - School Library Annual Reports: Connecting the Dots Between Your Library And Student Learning - where she answers the question, "Why would I want to add this to my already full end-of-year plate?"

    • You will be asked to reflect on all aspects of your library practice and program, including: instruction; circulation; collection development; the current state of your facility & goals for improving the space to create a more a learner-centered environment; and leadership.
      • In what ways are you acting as an LEADER in your school?

      • By show of hands, who has been asked to serve as a member of your school's S.T.A.T. Teacher Leader Corps next year?

      • Read "Librarians Lead the Way in Ed Tech" (Tech & Learning, 03/26/2015)

4.  Professional Learning Opportunities

5.  Important Resource Updates

  • ODL Resource Wiki: All LMS should be familiar with this wiki and its contents, and should actively share with teachers.

  • Digital Content Updates:
  • Destiny Updates:
    • ODL has purchased one Wonder eBook for every ES library's Follett Shelf (even if you already had one).
    • Several schools will be piloting Follett Classroom Connect for obtaining eBook circulation statistics; stay tuned.

6.  Summer Circulation & Library Hours

  • Destiny Summer Circulation and Reporting (Bill Groth)
  • Summer Program opportunity for Title I school libraries. Some Title 1 elementary school LMS may not be able to participate; if you may be willing to to serve students at one of these school libraries (12 hours), contact Fran.
  • Are you opening your Library for students this summer?  If you are a non-Title 1 school, send Tisome Archer this information by May 22 using email Subject line Summer Library Hours:
